Saving our Superb Parrot

The beautiful superb parrot is a much-loved threatened woodland bird that needs our help to protect and restore its habitat. The NSW Government’s Saving Our Species (SoS) program is providing nearly $400,000 to help farmers and land managers look after hollow-bearing trees and woodland vegetation and to replant trees and shrubs for the future, which will also contribute to sustainable farming ecosystems.

Funding will be available to protect living and dead large hollow-bearing eucalypt trees that provide nest sites for superb parrots. Funding can also support planting new paddock trees and shrubs and restoring woodlands to increase future habitat and landscape connectivity for superb parrots and many other threatened woodland fauna species. This community-based project adds to the work already being done by farmers and Landcare groups who have planted hundreds of thousands of trees and shrubs in paddocks, along fence lines and creeks and rivers.

 

 

Actions that will be funded to help the superb parrot

  1. Protecting living and dead paddock trees that are known superb parrot nest trees or that have hollows suitable for breeding sites
  2. Planting new paddock trees as long-term habitat
  3. Creating ‘stepping stones’ and corridors of trees and shrubs to increase connectivity between existing paddock trees and woodland patches
  4. Protecting existing woodland patches with fencing
  5. Direct seeding of trees and shrubs in paddocks using the Greening Australia “Whole of Paddock Rehabilitation” (WOPR) technique to create dense woodland patches for stock shelter and parrot feeding.

Information

Superb parrots nest in hollows in large living and dead trees.

Trees with hollows are becoming scarce, which is the key threat to the survival of the superb parrot. 

The ‘Saving Our superb parrot’ project will fund habitat protection and restoration on the South West Slopes and Southern Tablelands.

Saving our Species is a NSW Government flagship program targeting on-ground action to secure NSW’s threatened plants and animals from extinction.

The program aims to increase the number of species that can survive securely, in the wild. Saving our Species can only succeed if we work together. We need your help to ensure that today’s actions help to secure the future of NSW’s threatened species.

Paddock Trees

Isolated and small patches of trees - or paddock trees - are a prominent feature of agricultural landscapes in Australia. For the already highly cleared vegetation communities (e.g. Yellow Box), researchers, including researchers from OEH, have found that small patches of trees (up to 0.5 hectares) represent 40 per cent of remaining woodland cover and are therefore an extremely important focus for conservation and restoration efforts.
